The SPM treats a restrictive layer the same way it treats a water table for vertical separation purposes, so identifying it correctly is the difference between a design that works and one that surfaces effluent.

Slow-percolating soils typically need larger dispersal areas, shallow placement to stay in the more permeable upper horizons, and pressure distribution to load the field evenly. Where the usable footprint is too small — a common outcome on treed or sloping rural lots — Type 2 treatment reduces the required area enough to make the site work. The trade-off is an ongoing maintenance obligation, which the design documents and the owner must carry.

That matters because zoning, minimum parcel sizes, and building-permit routing come from the RDN or the municipality, while the sewerage system filing goes to Island Health. Why did my neighbour get a simple system and I need a bigger one?
